My mom had emergency eye surgery in 2014. I found out after. All I had were fragments: intense eye pain, a red eye, blurred vision, headache, and nausea. I searched Google and WebMD, where the same symptoms appeared under several serious conditions. I couldn't tell which details changed the answer or even which symptoms belonged together. When I heard “acute angle-closure glaucoma,” I nodded like I understood. I didn't. What followed was years of appointments every few months, eye drops twice a day, and a question that never went away: how seriously should I take this, and what should I have asked?

I'd walk into the appointment pretending I understood more than I did. The answers to my questions were measured: not wrong, but incomplete. The doctor was hedging because no one can carry every patient’s full history in their head, and the chart only tells part of the story. I didn't have the words to push further. We'd leave, and I still couldn't tell whether things were fine or I was missing something.

Before each follow-up, her notes would arrive two hours before the appointment while I was still at work. Sometimes they were on a napkin, sometimes in Cantonese, sometimes in broken English, often all three. They included IOP numbers and photos of the back of her eyes that I did not know how to read. Then she showed me a report marked “suspected Sjögren’s.” I didn't know what it meant, whether it connected to the glaucoma, or what we needed to ask next.

During the appointment, I translated between Chinese, broken English, and medical terms I had looked up in the parking lot two hours earlier. Afterward, I tried to turn the doctor's words into something she could use.
